We are excited to introduce our new arrivals from Jinsui, a renowned Tokoname ware manufacturer, including their beautifully crafted teapots and planters. Tokoname ware, originating from Tokoname City in Aichi Prefecture, is made from iron-rich clay sourced from the Chita Peninsula. The high iron content in the clay reacts with the tannins in tea, softening any bitterness or astringency, making Tokoname ware highly valued for teapots. One distinctive feature of these teapots is the unglazed surface, which remains porous after firing. This porosity allows it to absorb impurities in the tea, enhancing the purity and flavor of the brew.
The Tokoname area is home to many kilns, but Jinsui stands out for its exceptional craftsmanship and modern designs.
A key highlight of Jinsui's products is the innovative use of "Ceramesh," which is incorporated into the interiors of their teapots and planters. In teapots, Ceramesh replaces the need for a metal tea strainer, allowing you to brew tea by simply adding loose leaves and hot water directly into the teapot. The mesh filters the tea, ensuring you enjoy every drop without the metallic taste sometimes associated with metal strainers. In planters, Ceramesh is used at the drainage holes, eliminating the need for stones or fabric mesh to prevent soil from leaking, making plant care more convenient.
Additionally, Jinsui’s mastery of the traditional "Futasuri" technique used in teapot-making is worth noting. This process involves carefully grinding the lid and body of the teapot to create a perfect seal, enhancing the teapot’s ability to retain heat and allow the tea leaves to fully steep, bringing out their rich flavor.
Since each Jinsui product is handcrafted by artisans, mass production is not feasible, making their teapots and planters, especially those featuring Ceramesh, incredibly rare.
